documentCOLUMBIA is a photography project that inspires citizens of Columbia to document their lives and their town for one week. This year the contest runs in affiliation with the True/False Film Festival and the Columbia Tribune.
documentCOLUMBIA, the second annual "Week in the Life of Columbia" photography contest, runs this year in conjunction with the True/False Film Festival. True/False is the first major documentary film festival in Missouri, and will attract audiences from across the country to downtown Columbia. Along with VideoBox and One Night Stand, documentCOLUMBIA will involve Columbia citizens in contributing creatively to the festival.
Thank you everyone who participated in documentCOLUMBIA!
This year 32 participants contributed 133 images taken in Columbia December 7th through the 13th, 2003. The wonderful images include photographs of familiar Columbia landmarks as well as of special events that took place that week. They depict citizens of Columbia engaged in activities both everyday and extraordinary, and they show the city in transition as a blanket of snow turned late Fall into Winter.
In early January, Columbia Daily Tribune Photo Editor Brian Kratzer, University of Missouri Photojournalism Professor Zoe Smith, and fine art photographer Doug Hardesty met to judge the entries. They awarded a first, second and third place prize (as well as a couple of honorable mentions) in each of documentCOLUMBIA's three categories: Professional, General Citizen and Child.
Please join us on February 12th between 5:00 and 7:00 pm at the Ragtag Cinemacafe for the opening of the documentCOLUMBIA gallery show. One image by each photographer will be included in this show, which was generously printed and mounted with the assistance of Columbia Photo. Prizewinning images will be announced at this time, and gift certificates for the Pasta Factory and Sparky's Ice Cream will be awarded to the winners. Come and view Columbia as seen through the eyes of our local photographers!
