The music group Negativland has become legendary for its culture-jamming pranks and activism, serving as a constant thorn in the side of corporate media for the past 23 years. Founding member Mark Hosler will present 90 minutes of films, music, and storytelling in this presentation, which outlines the group's subversive, humor-based work. Best known as the subject of Craig Baldwin's documentary
Sonic Outlaws, and as the group that U2 sued for copywright infringement, Negativland explores a number of issues that are very much in public view these days — creative anti-corporate activism, media literacy, intellectual property issues, and the art of collage. The group's work is more important now than ever, investigating the evolving notions of culture and art in a digital age. (JS)
