Whether the South really won the Civil War is thrown into question, as we are finally able to watch a long-suppressed TV special right here in the Confederate States of America. Commercial breaks include spots for a Home Shopping Network-type program that specializes in marketing slaves and the Shackle, an electronic device that monitors wandering servants. University of Kansas professor Willmott has rewritten history in the guise of a Ken Burns-inspired package (including some little-seen 1906 footage of Abraham Lincoln in Canadian exile) that calls into question where the truth lies. The simultaneously angry and funny result compels us to look at a contemporary landscape where Confederate values may indeed have triumphed — it's no wonder that Spike Lee has signed on as the film's executive producer.
