Young, charismatic, and idealistic Ingrid Betancourt opens this film campaigning as the Oxygen Green Party candidate for President of Colombia. Her campaign and her subsequent kidnapping by the FARC guerillas is not only a fascinating story, but one that helps us open our minds and hearts to the plight of the thousands of kidnap victims abandoned by an indifferent government. Betancourt denounced the corruption within the Liberal Party and cited evidence of "a secret alliance between politicians and drug traffickers." But what makes this documentary so compelling is not political analysis or advocacy. Rather the focus here is a personal story about the effects on Ingrid Betancourt's family and, by extension, on the other families with members in captivity. (JA)
