Barry Bonds' record-setting home run ignited a free-for-all over
ownership of the baseball — and more important, the right to sell
it. This is the absurd true story of a bleakly comic skirmish that
ensued between two fans: the publicity-craving Alex Popov, and the more
demure Patrick Hayashi — from the frightening melee in the
bleachers through the trial, verdict and ultimate awarding of the
historic ball. The film has all the ingredients of a detective story and
an old-fashioned farce, as eyewitnesses and commentators weigh in. What
at first seems to be a trivial incident somehow gains tremendous
gravity:
Up For Grabs becomes a sobering parable about a
litigious society where things have clearly gone off the deep end.
