Here's a man who would not take it anymore. Tired of billboards broadcasting their insidious, insistent messages at us, the guerrilla artist Ron English decided to reverse the equation, and has perfected "subvertising" in which he hijacks outdoor ads to incriminate the original company or product. One eye-catching doctored ad calling for "Oil Dependence Day" features an SUV sale with a Chevy logo and the phrase "Like Iraq." In another, a wild-eyed Manson leers from Apple's "Think Different" ad. We've seen this sort of thing before, but English is a revelation: a master painter accomplished enough to replicate any style through the ages, but willing to risk arrest at every turn. The inspiring Popaganda is a celebration of our power to take control of our lives and our surrounding landscape.
