Philip Sharpe, a former rabbi living in a quiet English town, believes that he is destined to become a Hebrew king. To fulfill his fate, he must take multiple wives. Now, in addition to raising horses and running four antique shops, the go-getting Sharpe lives with seven women. While not legally his spouses, Sharpe's "wives" try to believe that God sanctions their union. Director Marc Isaacs insinuates himself into the polygamous clan's lives, filming their all-night meetings — marked by the passing of a microphone — as they muddle through their unconventional arrangement in search of what they hope will be spiritual fulfillment. Away from the group, many of the wives reveal intimate, surprising details and confess their inner struggles with the unconventional arrangement. And Sharpe discovers being a messiah isn't as easy as it may seem. (PS)
