Imagine the end of high school and the feeling of going forth in the world. Imagine being the first in your family to attend college. Now imagine your mother is an immigrant beauty-shop owner and your father is the chief of a village in Ghana. Bronx Princess follows Rocky, a seventeen-year-old New Yorker, as she faces these issues and more. Syeed & Brook, who last appeared at T/F with A Son's Sacrifice, tell Rocky's story with an energetic pace and impressive visual style. Plays with Lies (13 min.), three perfectly true stories about lying by Jonas Odell, who asks, "After all, aren't filmmakers the biggest, most glorified liars of them all?" We meet a clever burglar, a sneaky child, and a serial liar in this brilliant animated documentary that won best Sundance short. And Tommy (dir. Tora Martens, 18 min.), which colorfully introduces us to the joyful yet lonely life of a gay guesthouse owner in Havana. (DF)
