Rupert, an international journalist and human rights activist, and Kristin, a psychology professor, are a handsome couple on top of the world. But their young son Rowan's frequent tantrums — a symptom of his autism — turn simple activities into hellish trials. However, Rowan finds solace on horses, which leads the family on an improbable adventure to a remote section of Mongolia, the only place in the world that combines horseback riding and shamanic healing. Their search for a healer for their child may seem the stuff of a New Age fairy tale, but the couple demonstrate a hardheaded realism that makes them continually question the nature of their quest. A spiritual and physical journey, Over The Hills plays like a larger-than-life adventure movie, but its earthy twist makes it relevant for anyone struggling with the challenges of parenting. (PS)
