In person: director Mikel Cee Karlsson

Sneak preview. Having cut his teeth helming music videos for The Knife, Mikel Cee Karlsson's feature-length debut is a bizarre, magical collection of puzzle pieces that form an idiosyncratic portrait of Swedish suburbia. There's a man who walks around town dressed like a king and a woman who delivers strange lectures about Native American culture. There's an obsessive photographer and the director's own parents, who bide their time with rock gardens and dusty home-video footage of happier days. The most curious aspect of Greetings from the Woods is not, however, its eclectic characters but the way Karlsson carefully pieces the tableau together to convey a bounty of universal ideas. Offering more than just thematic richness, Karlsson's patient film is also a stunning atmospheric experience, beautifully shot, scored and edited. Plays with Monkey Business #2 (dir. Matthew Killip; 3 min.). (CB)
